  • 12:11 Peggy George: are both signed documents?
  • 12:11 Peggy George: are they both legally binding? or do they just guide the process?
  • 12:12 Dan Bassill: Getting corporate volunteers involved with tutor/mentor programs is my goal. This Billions + Change web site shows potential of enlisting business talent. (www.abillionpluschange.org)
  • 12:14 Dan Bassill: Refreshing to frame volunteering and service as an “opportunity” .
  • 12:14 Peggy George: both sides definitely benefit from the opportunities 🙂

  • 12:17 Peggy George: 🙂
  • 12:18 Jason A. Engerman: So you do the process of matching?
  • 12:18 Peggy George: are all of those matches based on self-reports? how do you really know their skills?
  • 12:18 Dan Bassill: Jason, Peggy — keeping volunteers engaged in on going service is really important. A challenge, too.
  • 12:19 Jennifer Maddrell: She is good!
  • 12:19 Peggy George: seems like a lot of detail to manage 🙂
  • 12:19 Dan Bassill: If teams from company or college are learning about the problem, they can frame the way they are engaged, often better than the non profit
  • 12:19 Jason A. Engerman: This is the power of using groups I believe
  • 12:20 Dan Bassill: Need to sign off. I’ll check the recording. Thanks for hosting
  • 12:20 Jason A. Engerman: Thanks Dan
  • 12:20 Peggy George: thanks for joining us Dan!
  • 12:21 Jason A. Engerman: I think maybe it should be different for different courses. Because you have different goals
  • 12:21 Peggy George: it seems like there is a lot of value in having the students find their own clients–real world experience
  • 12:22 Peggy George: love that description! don’t have time for team dysfunction!
  • 12:23 Peggy George: great to have it be a team problem solving experience
  • 12:24 Briju: Yes we can
  • 12:26 Peggy George: that would make a powerful addition to their portfolio!
  • 12:27 Barb M. Hall: Since the team is now virtual, do students find their own clients, or is that still Dr. Tracey’s role?
  • 12:29 Peggy George: thanks for clarifying that about the difference between the intro course and the capstone Master’s course! That makes sense!
  • 12:30 Peggy George: how do you teach the students about building relationships which is such an important piece?
  • 12:32 Barb M. Hall: Peggy, I am wondering if that would not be one of the more foundational skills of working with SMEs/content experts.
  • 12:32 Jason A. Engerman: Great support structure
  • 12:33 Barb M. Hall: Without PhD students, we would need to be creative about that additional support person.
  • 12:33 Jason A. Engerman: That’s pretty cool
  • 12:33 Peggy George: I’m not really sure it can be “taught” but it is certainly infused throughout the entire process
  • 12:35 Jason A. Engerman: How do we get ID faculty members to realize the importance of this application piece to their course? Many are stuck in their own frameworks.
  • 12:35 Barb M. Hall: I agree, Peggy, that the skill may be LEARNED but not necessarily TAUGHT. <wink>
  • 12:35 Jason A. Engerman: They usually like to simply teach or talk research
  • 12:36 Jennifer Maddrell: http://dschool.stanford.edu/
  • 12:36 Peggy George: thanks Jennifer!

  • 12:41 Peggy George: brilliant idea for pediatric diabetes! how disappointing they weren’t ready for it!
  • 12:42 Peggy George: I think the kids would have loved it!
  • 12:43 Barb M. Hall: What resources do you use to teach design first?
  • 12:45 Peggy George: that’s so true! you can assume technology savvy based on age!
  • 12:47 Peggy George: you CAN’T-that was a typo!
  • 12:47 Peggy George: I love Monica’s passion!! Very contagious!
  • 12:50 Barb M. Hall: I had a question about which resources she used to teach design generally before instructional design.
  • 12:50 Jennifer Maddrell: oh, yes! Sorry Barb!
